Abstract

The Dutch Paper Industry committed itself to increase it’s energy efficiency up to 50% in 2020. This ambitious target can not be accomplished easily and asks for a structural approach on both sector level and enterprise level. On sectoral level the sector organization, supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, focused on a sector wide energy transition programme.

Within this programme working clusters are formed around specific theme’s of which one of them is energy management. This cluster consist of experts from paper mills who discuss common issues regarding implementation of energy management conform ISO 50001. One of the paper mills participating in this cluster is Sappi that was certified for ISO 50001 as the first paper mill in the Netherlands in the beginning of 2012.

The paper focuses on the implementation of ISO 50001 at the Sappi Mill in Nijmegen, the Netherlands: Practicalities of the implementation process, integration within existing organisational structures and systems and of course the results that can be attributed to the energy management approach. Sappi succeed in increasing it’s energy efficiency with 17% in the period 2006-2010. Also the sectoral cluster approach, with one specific cluster of enterprises dedicated to energy management, will be elaborated. How knowledge, experiences and best practises are shared and how enterprises open their factory for their sector colleagues and how friendly audits are performed at their site by these sector colleagues.
